What chance the Warriors

The new NRL season kicks off this weekend, and as reported earlier on this blog it looks like the New Zealand Warriors will start 4 points behind everyone else. For a really detailed review of the season go here and read Chris Riediger's review of the season. He has predicted the way the minor premier will finish and it looks like this

North Queensland Cowboys
Parramatta Eels
Sydney Roosters
The Bulldogs
Melbourne Storm
Wests Tigers
Dragons
Sea Eagles
Broncos
Knights
Rabittohs
Panthers
Sharks
Warriors
Raiders

This is a very good attempt at predicting the season. I think that he is underrating the Dragons slightly. It is time that the talented individuals came together to produce the team performances that should see them finish in the top 3. He also has Wests Tigers finishing high up in 6th place whereas I actually think that they will flatter to deceive this season and will struggle to make the end of year premiership.

My league would look like this

Roosters
Eels
Dragons
Cowboys
Bulldogs
Broncos
Knights
Eagles
Tigers
Panthers
Sharks
Warriors
Storm
Rabbitohs
Raiders

We'll take a regular health check on this throughout the season to see how my prediction is coming along.

Moving onto the Warriors, they are expecting a decision tomorrow on the points deduction but this is not expected to be overturned. It means this season can pretty much be written off. Its a shame that such a basic error was made and that they had to be made an example of. I'm not happy about the punishment but understand that in these cases you cannot afford to let people or teams of lightly or it will open the door for everyone else to do the same.

So what will we consider a success for this season. Well a stable team for a start and a better defensive record. If I was confident I would have them finishing around 9th if they can find some consistency. However with the four point penalty I cannot see them finishing above 12th. They open up the season on Sunday against the Melbourne Storm, they won the corresponding fixture last season and will hope to eat into that 4 point deficit from the start. They had a good victory in the last trial game over the Bulldogs with Tony Martin coming off the bench to good effect. They will look to play him from the start to get off to a flyer on Sunday. I'm not sure if the game will be televised here in the UK, but I am looking for a strong start to the season for the Warriors.
