Another top 5 scalp

If you take a look at the top of the Nationwide Conference at the moment you will see the following teams Accrington Stanley, Hereford United, Stevanage, Halifax and Grays Atheltic. Three of theses sides have something in common, and that is that they have turned up to the Abbey Stadium taken a sound beating and left with their tales between their legs. Tonight I hope that Cambridge can add Greys Athletic to that list, and in 11 days time complete the quintet with Halifax.

The fact is plain and simple, at home Cambridge are more than a match for the top teams in the conference and if their away from was not so poor they would be up there challenging for a play off spot. Tonight they take on Greys Athletic who gave them a lesson in finishing at the start of the season, giving us a 5-3 thumping at their place. We have moved on since then and will hopefully show some of the resolve that led us to our first away victory of 2006 last Saturday.

One blow will be that David Bridges looks set to miss the game because of a shoulder injury picked up on Saturday. I cannot say enough about his contribution to the team this season, it makes you wonder why on earth he was let go by us a couple of years ago. He has the ability to become an excellent player at a much higher level, if he can continue this form and stop picking up bookings for dissent and ungentlemanly conduct. The question will be can we replace him in midfield, the answer will be not completely but hopefully who ever Newman picks in his place tonight will realize the big shoes they will have to feel.

The only other conundrum he should have is whether or not he should continue with the back four that kept a clean sheet on Saturday. Mark Peters will be itching to get back in the team and has been one of our better players this season. I believe Rob Newman has to start to try to pick the same team in consecutive games and should stay with what he's got. I'm not even sure that I would put Peters on the bench as he already has the more than capable Michael Morrison there. As I have said before its time to start looking to next season so maybe leaving Peters out altogether is the best thing to do. Whatever team he puts out let hope it can do the same as it did to the other three teams in the top five.
